The Viele Map

Created by Egbert L. Viele in 1865, the Sanitary and Topographical Map of the City and Island of New York (aka the Viele map), shows the pre-grid, natural state of the island, including some 500 hills, 88 miles of streams, 21 ponds and 300 springs.

High Line Phase 2

Phase 2 of the High Line opened last Wednesday and I walked it with a few friends...it was beyond everyone's expectations.  I went back yesterday and took pictures until my camera's battery died. The sights change every few feet, from novel views of the familiar skyline, to Alice in Wonderland-like passages through post-modern buildings.  And walking the structure itself is like walking an English Garden along the third floor of the city.  Magnificent.

  2. Very cool. I don't think my sister, who lives in NYC, has seen much of this, but I wish she has. I won't make it to NYC for a while, but, please, keep up the good work.

    Cheers,
    Peter

  3. Are you aware of the Spectra pipeline, “New Jersey-New York Expansion Project,” which is due to, UH, "end" at the Highline?
    .
"Should the pipeline or vault explode on the Manhattan side of the Hudson, the potential fire radius would encompass three historic districts... as well as the massively popular High Line."
